Star Value Analysis - Ms LORNA TOLENTINO #SeasonedStar

Our favorite #SeasonedStar Ms LORNA TOLENTINO reinvents herself anew ala-Hollywood icon Meryll Streep in "BURGOS," a Cinemalaya film which we firmly believe deserves a proper and well-promoted wide theatrical release.

Star Value Analysis - PIOLO PASCUAL #TopStar

Thanks to finally getting the right movie material at the right time, this ABS-CBN #TopStar is a "Resurgent Star!" PIOLO PASCUAL gets a much-deserved second wind in his career via the enormous success of "Starting Over Again", one that our analysis saw coming before many in the industry.

#MVSA 2014 - Most Valuable Stars of Ads 2014 (Philippines)

Using our patented Star Value Rating System, StarValuePH is featuring its list of the Most Valueable Stars of Advertising a.k.a. #MVSA. VALUE is the main operative term in this list; Value of and for the Product endorsed, Value of and for the Endorsing Stars and most importantly, Value of and for the the Audience/Consumers.

Ads produced in 2013 and still airing in 2014 qualify for our analysis. The following is our current yet still ongoing list.

JUDY ANN SANTOS for EDEN CHEESE

SARAH GERONIMOAPL D AP,  ENRIQUE GIL and  ELMO MAGALONA for REXONA

DANIEL PADILLA for OISHI MARTY'S CRACKLIN' VEGETARIAN CHICHARON

PIOLO PASCUAL for SUNLIFE FINANCIAL

Our analysis is unique because it goes beyond the mere ad itself and looks at the bigger picture which is what advertisers should really aspire for in every ad - be it with or without a celebrity endorser.

Sunlife Financial has a distinct need and message that must be conveyed to the larger public by its celebrity endorser in the person of Piolo Pascual. Admittedly, the actor has gone through several difficult instances in his career but Sunlife stood by its star. Thus, it proved only providential (no pun intended) that Sunlife be part of Mr. Pascual's sudden rise anew, career-wise, courtesy of his super blockbuster "Starting Over Again."

Through good and bad times, you want your insurance policy to be a steady support. That is exactly what the BIGGER PICTURE is between Sunlife and Piolo Pascual - ergo a most valuable ad-and-star partnership that is now the envy of other companies in similar business.

MEGAN YOUNG for SECURITY BANK

Star Value Points for fresh yet totally appropriate and credible casting of reigning Miss World 2013 Megan Young as endorser of a product, in this case Security Bank, that requires an impeccable image of unquestionable stability, maturity and intelligence. Ms. Young even adds the important elements of youth and relevance which makes this ad campaign one of the most successful casting coup to date.

"...a stoically moving lead turn from local industry legend Nora Aunor."           - Guy Lodge (Variety)

"A wealth of accolades have escorted the feature’s travels around the international festival circuit, including several for Mendoza’s efforts; however the film belongs to his applauded leading lady. The Filipino industry icon devastates in her depiction of the most selfless of acts; in her simmering fortitude and internalised pain, she ensures Henry Burgos’ (Palawan Fate) screenplay is never less than heart-breaking."

- Sarah Ward (Tresspasmag)

"Philippines entertainment legend Nora Aunor stars in a drama by award-winning director Brillante Mendoza...

...Nora Aunor, an enduring mega-star of his nation's cinema and music industries...

...Fifty-nine-year-old Aunor's 170-film career dates back to the 1960s, including collaborations with colossal figures of Philippine cinema such as Lino Brocka and Gerardo de Leon. And her elfin features, so powerfully expressive of both happiness and sorrow, help make Shahela an engaging, unlikely heroine here. It's a shame, then, that her character is ultimately somewhat ill-served by Burgos and Mendoza's overall design, especially in the underdeveloped finale which concludes on an ironic but naggingly unsatisfying note just as things are about to get much more interesting..."                                                                                                                                                                              - Neil Young (The Hollywood Reporter)

"Aunor in particular provides a stunningly insightful and deep portrayal of a woman torn between devotion to her husband, and the agonising thought of sharing him with another woman. Day by day, she leaves her village for neighbouring islands to seek a new mate for him, but the pain in her eyes goes unnoticed."

- Rod Lewis (OZAsia)

Film

"BAKIT BUGHAW ANG LANGIT"
director - Mario O'Hara

"Aunor by this time had already been called one of the Philippines' best actress, and for far showier performances In Bakit Bughaw, she takes her archetypal role--the oppressed, dark-skinned little Filipina--and plays it with a simplicity and lack of consciousness that is, in a word, astounding. It's as if she invented the character on the spot, as if the role was really her, and that she had never played anything else before (which, if you've seen Ikaw ay Akin (You Are Mine, 1978), Fe, Esperanza, Caridad (1975) and Ina Ka ng Anak Mo (You Are The Mother of Your Son, 1979) among many others, you know isn't true at all). Aunor matches O'Hara's immense patience, gathering detail after detail until her character is as believable as any real person--is more believable than any mere person. You feel as if you knew someone like this, that this was perhaps based on (for all you know) your next-door neighbor (and that is one of O'Hara's secrets--that his characters are always based on someone he knew or met in one of his daily walks about Manila). This film, of which officially there is no print left in existence, is one of Aunor's finest performances, one of O'Hara's best works, and one of the great unknown--perhaps lost--treasures of Philippine cinema."

Heartthrobs Sing-Off! DANIEL PADILLA and JAMES REID

An age-old rule of thumb in Pinoy showbiz is the requirement for upcoming film & tv stars to know how to sing and dance, but more on the singing than the dancing actually.

And today's hottest teen #TopStar Daniel Padilla is no exception. His single, "Nasa 'Yo na ang Lahat" because quite a niche sensation - for the song itself as much as for the character and the performance of the young Padilla.

Now the same tactic to stardom is being employed to instant #RisingStar JAMES REID. The song has not really been a hit (yet?) but it does show what differentiates this Aussie-Pinoy from the all-Pinoy star whose career path his handlers are surely aiming to replicate.

The question remains whether the young Reid is indeed the rightful rival to that of the young Padilla who still seem to have none at the moment.

For now, let this sing-off set the tone of this budding rivalry.

Here's a challenge to fans of both teen-stars - can you tell who sings his tune better - Daniel or James?
But on second, can we expect fans to really be objective about this? Remember, all this is just for the sake of entertainment :)

Guys and gals, set your volumes...
