- something more sinister. something more sad. something more urgent. yet it is also something most of us can participate in and change for better -
Directors Guild of the Philippines' Official Statement
1st "Official Scandal" of #MMFF2015?
"HONOR THY FATHER" NOT QUALIFIED FOR BEST PICTURE AWARD
Absent official figures from the Metro Manila Film Festival 2015 Committee, claims and reports of top-grossing MMFF movie point to "MY BEBE LOVE" as #1 on Day 1.
MMFF 2015 Official Denial of Malicious "Ticket-Swapping" Claim
Twelve (12) months later, local stakeholders are hailing Quantum Films as the newest box-office-maker in the mainstream film industry and Jennylyn the newest darling of romantic comedies. More distinctly, she is probably the only one who is not an ABS-CBN star. Derek too didn't do badly after EOP, as he has since been "welcomed back" to the ABS-CBN/Star Cinema. Yet the stakeholder whose star value gained the most (arguably) from EOP is screenwriter/director Antonette Jadaone. Without belaboring the obvious, we'll just say that Ms Jadaone's works and influence now are the strongest elements in this year's edition of the Metro Manila Film Festival, perhaps challenged only by the presence of the tv hit accidental tandem of Alden Richards and Maine Mendoza, more popularly known as "Aldub."
This year, this blog is adopting and extending the same kind of support for yet another independent festival entry.
Critical Acclaim for "Honor Thy Father" "Honor Thy Father is many things: a suspenseful story of betrayal and retribution, a drama about familial reconciliation, and a commentary on the tenuous nature of newfound wealth. Holding everything together are Matti's fluid, skilled direction and the tightly wound performance by Cruz, whose Edgar — disgusted by the greed and hypocrisy he encounters — seems always on the verge of exploding." - Toronto International Film Festival Analyst's Favorites
This is a subjective list. The objective star value rating system is not applied.
In terms of core message, Sunlife's #LiveFreePH campaign is currently one of our most favorite. Wonder why the company didn't utilize it's biggest star endorser in the actual video.
Global Film Critics Simply Cannot Ignore the Lead Presence of Ms Nora Aunor in #Taklub
(as Brillante Film Earns Mixed Reactions)
VARIETY: "Without the provocative content of films like “Serbis” or “Kinatay,” it will be hard for this quiet work to make a dent in European arthouse circles. Domestic response will be much warmer, given its relevance, but mostly thanks to the reverence that lead actress Nora Aunor commands." The Hollywood Reporter: "Philippine cinema grand dame Nora Aunor headlines Brillante Mendoza’s ensemble drama about survivors grieving over loved ones lost during the devastating typhoon Haiyan...it’s the overall controlled performances from the cast – ranging from veterans like Aunor and Diaz, to younger faces like Rivera and Santos – which propels the film." "TAKLUB is the best film I have made so far" - #Superstar Nora Aunor

#Superstar NORA AUNOR Stands Her Grounds, Decides Not to Fly to #Cannes2015
"Aunor’s confidante claimed it isn’t the first time “pinabayaan nila kami.” He said that when they went to Venice in 2012 for the 69th Venice International Film Festival (where “Thy Womb” won the Bisato D’Oro, La Navicella or Venezia Cinema prize and the P. Nazareno Taddei Award Special Mention) “nagsama-sama sila duon, pero kami, andun lang kami sa isang hotel, wala man lang nag-a-asikaso sa amin.”
Aunor didn’t say anything about it, said Rendez, and she aims to do the same with the whole Cannes issue. If anything, the veteran actress is said to be waiting for Mendoza or anyone from his camp to reach out to her. “I’m hoping they could work it out…” Rendez said."
#StarValueAnalysis : Given that
a) the Cannes Film Festival belongs to THE three (3) most prestigious, influential and important film festivals in the world (along with Berlin and Venice film festivals,
b) TAKLUB is an official entry in competition,
c) Nora Aunor is the lead actor in Taklub
d) several government agencies are named producers of the film project mainly represented by Senator Loren Legarda ,
this incident is admittedly nothing short of embarrassing for the Philippine delegation, in particular, and the Philippines as a country participant in general.
Humiliating, yes but we say bitterly necessary if only for the inevitable consequence that this incident brings, highlighting the sore lack of much deserved respect and support provided to even globally acclaimed and accomplished Filipino artists in the Philippines, like Ms Aunor by the local film industry entities and officials, the national government and the audience in general.
And yet again, it takes a NORA AUNOR to bring this to light.
Remember, Ms Nora Aunor stayed and shot #TAKLUB right in the heart of still devastated Tacloban with nary a qualm just like she stayed and shot #ThyWomb in rebel infested territory, again with full professionalism and unexpected artistic commitment and genius.
Now that the project is done and it's "time to party" so to speak, it is conscientious for everyone involved in the project to give the proper treatment this genius artist deserves (and of course we mean the artist Aunor).
Given the current state of censorship of free expression in the Philippines, it is most safe to assume that the following art works or similar depictions of said art works in various media - print, tv, film, advertising - may never ever be allowed to be shown lest these images pollute the immaculate sensibilities of the most conservative Filipinos in the Catholic Philippines.
So enjoy these art works here.

#StarValuePOV for #SeasonedStar Ms DAWN ZULUETA #TopStarNetwork ABS-CBN announces its first set of shows lined-up for 2015 and, judging by the edit, the Lopez-controlled channel is telling the public how highly it regards the tandem of #SeasonedStars DAWN ZULUETA and RICHARD GOMEZ.
Dawn and Richard opens and technically closes the ad that comes to a full circle with the KATHNIEL tandem, ABS-CBN's crowned Teen King and Queen! It's a level-upped positioning that undeniably shows how valued and still very much current the Zulueta-Gomez is.
We will be looking forward for the actual show, plugged as "Will Never Say Goodbye", which judging from the cast appears to be a genuine, all-out Dawn-Richard headliner! If so, that in itself is a feat for Ms Dawn and Richard especially considering the Y and Z-gen heavy casting the rest of ABS-CBN's shows are (and are known for). And while our objective #StarValueAnalysis prefers a Dawn-Richard headliner film to come first - as the strategic follow up to the tandem's comeback, which not a few credited (Dawn-Richard) as among the strongest reasons why the said soap was such a huge success - we're more than willing and ready to give the "think tanks" of the Kapamilya the benefit of the doubt that this move would prove to be the most beneficial, to ABS-CBN, in general, and to the #StarValue of Ms Dawn Zulueta and Richard Gomez, in particular.
#StarValueAnalysis - Challenges While the "Bida sa 2015" video plug was good and gives the Dawn-Richard tandem its proper importance which should excite many, this official poster(?) leaves so much room for improvement. To quote one commenter on another blog (not ours), to wit "Medyo di maganda ang poster. Halatang pinagdikit-dikit." Dawn-Richard fans, do you Agree or do you Agree?
As part of our POV (Priority in Observation of Value), these stars will get our active support in the promotion of their individual projects through our social media accounts in blogger, twitter, facebook and instagram (coming soon).
With the help of their fans, producers, advertisers and the general public, one of our goal is to help contribute to the continued success of these talented stars who we think deserve their spotlights!
This is not to imply though that those not included in our current list are any less of a star themselves. Local showbiz is indeed brighter than ever because of the many stars in our midst. The sheer number of exciting stars stars, so much more than we can adequately focus on, is the only reason that we are limiting our list to fifteen (15) and that we have noted* to update this list as the need and dynamics of local showbiz require.
With that, we are proud to present our 15 chosen #StarPOV2015!
